A two-year-old’s love for baseball inspired his parents to bring the excitement of a major league game right into their backyard. Nicole Quimby and her husband, who live in Tampa, Florida, spent around $2,000 and an entire month turning their garden into a miniature version of Boston’s iconic Fenway Park for their son Jaxson’s second birthday. The celebration featured a baseball diamond, a replica of Fenway’s famous Green Monster wall, a ticket booth, stadium-style food and even a home run derby for the young guests. According to PEOPLE, which first reported the project brought together relatives, friends and neighbours to create a birthday experience that went well beyond a conventional children’s party. The story was also carried by AOL, while the Boston Red Sox’s official website provides background on the ballpark’s distinctive features. A little boy’s love for baseball sparked the idea The inspiration came from Jaxson’s growing interest in baseball. His father, a lifelong Boston Red Sox supporter who grew up in New England, had introduced the family to Fenway Park during a visit to Boston two years earlier. The trip became a special family memory, with the children getting to experience the historic ballpark and learn about the team’s legacy. When the family returned to Fenway this year, they noticed that Jaxson was developing an interest of his own in the sport. For his second birthday, the couple decided to recreate some of that experience at home rather than organise a conventional celebration. They wanted the children to feel as though they were stepping into an actual baseball stadium. Recreating Fenway Park in a Florida backyard The transformation began with the lawn. The couple mowed the grass into the shape of a baseball diamond, laid out the bases, brought in dirt and painted the foul lines using equipment they already owned. The biggest undertaking was recreating the Green Monster, Fenway Park’s famous left-field wall. The family sourced framed wooden panels through Facebook Marketplace and painted them in the distinctive green associated with the original structure. They then added a scoreboard decal, the Red Sox logo and white distance markers to make the installation look more authentic. The wall became the centrepiece of the backyard, giving the miniature stadium much of its character. The attention to detail continued inside the house. Nicole created baseball-themed table decorations, while her grandmother designed a small ticket booth where children could collect personalised VIP passes. Each young guest also received a customised bag and cup, along with play money to use at the entrance. A grand stadium reveal and a day of baseball The family wanted the guests to experience the surprise rather than simply walk into the backyard and see the finished setup. They arranged seating inside the house and concealed the garden behind curtains. Before revealing the miniature stadium, guests watched two specially produced videos featuring Jaxson. One showed him practising his pitching and batting, while the other followed a fictional baseball storyline in which he was waiting for his promotion from the minor leagues to the major leagues. When the curtains finally opened, the guests were greeted by the completed baseball field and an American flag. The moment was accompanied by Whitney Houston’s rendition of the national anthem, recreating the atmosphere of a major sporting event. The celebration continued with several familiar ballpark traditions. There were hot dogs, nachos, peanuts, sunflower seeds and Cracker Jack, along with ice cream served in miniature baseball helmets. The family also arranged themed desserts, including a cake inspired by Wally, the Boston Red Sox mascot, and baseball-themed cookies prepared by Nicole’s grandfather.Children arrived wearing baseball jerseys and caps, with each getting to select their own walk-up song. They were introduced one at a time as they walked down a red carpet through smoke-machine effects before stepping up to bat. A home run derby became one of the day’s main attractions, giving even children who had never played baseball an opportunity to try the sport. A family effort that cost around $2,000 The month-long project was far from a one-person undertaking. Nicole’s mother, grandmother, both grandfathers and several friends helped with the preparations. Some friends even travelled from Maine and Naples to contribute to the finishing touches, while two college students from the neighbourhood assisted with assembling the field. The family spent approximately $1,500 on dirt and materials for the baseball setup, with another $500 going towards indoor decorations. The total expenditure came to around $2,000. For Jaxson, the biggest reward was getting to run around the field with his friends. Seeing approximately 25 children playing together on the miniature diamond made the weeks of preparation worthwhile for his parents. The celebration also continued to generate interest after the birthday itself, with the family receiving messages and appreciation from guests, including those who could not attend. What began as a way to celebrate a toddler’s growing fascination with baseball eventually became a family-wide creative project. And for one birthday, a little piece of Boston’s Fenway Park found an unlikely home in a Florida backyard.
