15 elephants have died in southern Kenya in what wildlife authorities believe is one of the region’s worst wildlife poisoning incidents in decades. Preliminary laboratory tests detected cyanide in samples taken from the animals, with investigators suspecting the elephants ingested pesticide-contaminated tomatoes from farms bordering Amboseli National Park. The deaths occurred over a month between 24 June and 24 July in the Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Group Ranch areas, where elephants frequently roam in search of food and water. While cyanide poisoning has emerged as the leading explanation, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) says investigations are continuing to determine exactly how the contamination occurred and whether it was accidental or intentional.

What happened to the elephants near Kenya’s Amboseli National Park?

The Kenya Wildlife Service said laboratory analysis detected cyanide in tissue samples collected from the elephant carcasses. Officials believe the animals may have consumed tomatoes grown on nearby farms that had been contaminated with cyanide-based agricultural chemicals. Although the findings strongly point towards poisoning, KWS has not yet released a final investigation report identifying the precise source of the contamination or who may be responsible.According to wildlife officials, 10 of the elephants displayed signs of partial paralysis before dying within one to two days. The remaining five elephants had already died by the time rangers located them, with several carcasses in an advanced state of decomposition. The victims included elephants of different ages and sexes, indicating the deaths were spread across multiple family groups rather than a single herd.

Deaths occurred outside Amboseli National Park

The elephants died in the Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Group Ranch, conservation areas that form part of the wider Amboseli ecosystem along the Kenya-Tanzania border. These landscapes lie adjacent to farms where tomatoes and other crops are cultivated. Amboseli is home to more than 2,000 elephants and is regarded as one of Africa’s most important elephant conservation areas, known for its long-term research and successful anti-poaching efforts.

Investigators have not ruled on the source

Although cyanide has been identified in preliminary tests, officials say they are continuing to analyse soil, water, crops and other environmental samples to determine how the toxic chemical entered the food chain. Authorities have not found evidence of organised poaching or other foul play at this stage, and they have cautioned that the investigation remains ongoing until all laboratory analyses are complete.

Authorities warn livestock could also be at risk

KWS Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga said the contamination could extend beyond wildlife because goats and cattle also graze in the affected areas. He warned that if the suspected cyanide contamination is confirmed in the surrounding environment, the impact could spread to domestic livestock and other wild animals. However, wildlife officials have stated that the incident poses no immediate threat to human health.

Human-wildlife conflict under fresh scrutiny

The incident has renewed concerns about the growing overlap between agriculture and wildlife habitats around Amboseli National Park. As farming expands near protected areas, elephants increasingly venture into cultivated fields searching for food and water, raising the likelihood of encounters with pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. Conservation organisations have described the deaths as deeply alarming, noting that mass elephant mortalities of this scale have become rare in Amboseli after years of successful efforts to curb poaching.

Surveillance intensified as investigation continues

The Kenya Wildlife Service has increased monitoring across the Amboseli ecosystem while veterinary experts continue examining additional environmental samples. Officials are also urging local communities to handle agricultural chemicals responsibly as investigators work to establish whether contaminated tomatoes were indeed the source of the poisoning and to prevent any further wildlife deaths.
