A look at the British Royal Family’s wealth, taxpayer-funded support, royal estates and income sources. (Photo: Facebook) How much does the British Royal Family cost British taxpayers, and how wealthy are King Charles III and Prince William? A new UK Parliament briefing on royal finances has revealed how public money supports the monarchy, while also explaining the income generated by historic royal estates and the tax arrangements followed by senior members of the family. The Sovereign Grant, which funds the King’s official duties, stands at £137.9 million for 2026/27. However, the government has proposed reducing it to £99.9 million in 2027/28 following the completion of the Buckingham Palace refurbishment.Meanwhile, a report by The Mirror has drawn attention to Prince William’s financial position, including the £1.2 billion valuation of the Duchy of Cornwall and his reported £21.6 million income in 2025-26. King Charles, meanwhile, has an estimated personal fortune of £640 million, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. Here’s how the Royal Family earns its money, pays taxes and uses public funding. How much does the British Royal Family receive from taxpayers? King Charles receives £137.9 million through the Sovereign Grant in 2026/27, with a proposed reduction to £99.9 million in the following year. (Photo: Facebook) The Sovereign Grant was introduced in 2012/13 under the Sovereign Grant Act 2011, replacing earlier sources of royal funding, including the Civil List. According to the House of Commons Library briefing, the grant has reached £137.9 million for 2026/27.The money covers the maintenance of occupied royal palaces, official travel undertaken by the King and members of the Royal Family representing him, and the salaries and employment costs of Royal Household staff. It also supports official duties and events. The grant is intended for the monarchy’s public responsibilities, not the King’s private expenditure. Its calculation is linked to, but not directly derived from, profits generated by the Crown Estate. The amount is reviewed every five years, with the latest review beginning in 2026. Why is King Charles’ Sovereign Grant set to fall to £99.9 million? The government has introduced the Sovereign Grant Bill 2026-27, which proposes reducing the grant after the completion of Buckingham Palace’s extensive refurbishment programme.Subject to the legislation, the funding will fall to £99.9 million in 2027/28. However, the proposed amount would still be 65% higher in real terms than the funding received in 2016/17, before the palace’s major reservicing programme began. The bill also proposes a mechanism for future reductions to prevent what the government describes as ‘inappropriately high funding’. Is Prince William richer than King Charles? Inside the £1.2 billion Duchy of Cornwall The Duchy of Cornwall is valued at £1.2 billion, while King Charles’ personal fortune has been estimated at £640 million. (Photo: Facebook) According to The Mirror, the Duchy of Cornwall, which provides income to the heir to the throne, is valued at approximately £1.2 billion. Prince William became the 25th Duke of Cornwall after Queen Elizabeth II’s death and King Charles’ accession in September 2022. He is entitled to the estate’s annual profits as the Prince of Wales. The estate covers approximately 51,800 hectares across 19 counties. Its accounts show that William received £21.6 million in private income during 2025-26. In comparison, King Charles’ personal fortune has been estimated at £640 million by the Sunday Times Rich List, an increase of £30 million from the previous year. However, the two figures are not directly comparable. The £1.2 billion valuation refers to the Duchy of Cornwall, not William’s personal wealth. The estate is not his private property to sell or dispose of freely; he receives its net surplus income under the arrangements governing the Duchy. How much tax has Prince William paid? The Mirror reported that Prince William paid £7.76 million in income and capital gains tax in 2024-25. His tax contribution in the previous financial year, 2023-24, was £8.34 million. According to the publication, his total tax payments have exceeded £20 million since he became Prince of Wales in 2022.There is no legal obligation for the British monarch or the Prince of Wales to pay income tax. However, since 1993, the King and his heir have voluntarily agreed to pay income tax at statutory rates on income from the Duchies and earnings from personal investments. The arrangement does not apply to the Sovereign Grant, which is public funding for official royal duties. The King and his heir also pay capital gains tax and inheritance tax in certain circumstances. These arrangements are outlined in a non-statutory Memorandum of Understanding between the Treasury and the Royal Household. Why Prince William has given up £1.5 million in annual Dartmoor Prison rent Prince William has reportedly directed the £1.5 million annual rent from Dartmoor Prison towards community regeneration rather than personal benefit. (Photo: Facebook) Another detail highlighted by The Mirror is William’s decision to redirect the £1.5 million annual rent from Dartmoor Prison towards community regeneration rather than receive it as personal income from the Duchy. The Duchy signed a £37 million agreement in 2022 to lease the prison to the Ministry of Justice, with an annual rental payment of £1.5 million over 25 years. A separate arrangement allows the Ministry of Defence to use Dartmoor land for armed forces training. The Category C prison in Devon has remained empty since July 2024 after high levels of radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, were detected in prisoners’ accommodation. A community-led regeneration fund is expected to launch in 2027 to support Princetown, with the aim of delivering social, economic and environmental benefits.Kensington Palace figures show that the household staff supporting Prince William and Kate Middleton has increased from 68 to 74. The diversity figures reveal that 14.9% of employees come from ethnic minority backgrounds, compared with 13.2% the previous year. Women account for 73% of the workforce, while men make up 27%. How else does the Royal Family earn money? Apart from the Sovereign Grant, King Charles and Prince William receive income through two historic estates: the Duchy of Lancaster and the Duchy of Cornwall. The King receives income from the Duchy of Lancaster through the Privy Purse, which is funded by the estate’s surplus revenue. William receives the net profits generated by the Duchy of Cornwall. Both estates operate independently, are subject to legislation and undergo independent audits.King Charles also has private income from investments and inherited wealth, although the full details of his personal finances are not publicly disclosed. Does King Charles personally own Buckingham Palace and the Crown Estate? Not every property associated with the monarchy belongs to the King personally. According to the parliamentary briefing, assets such as the Crown Estate, occupied royal palaces, government buildings and the Royal Collection are held ‘in right of’ the Crown or the United Kingdom. This means the King cannot freely sell these assets or treat them as personal sources of income. The Crown Estate, in particular, is not his private property. Its profits contribute to public finances and form part of the framework used to calculate the Sovereign Grant.
