Ukraine on Thursday said it expected the outcome of the US midterm elections to create new opportunities for support from Washington, after the victory of Democrats in both US houses.Speaking at a press conference in Bucharest, foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv was hopeful that the political changes in the United States would lead to further assistance.“We expect new dynamics. Every change always gives a chance for new dynamics. We expect new steps to support Ukraine,” he said, Reuters reported.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had also welcomed the Democrats’ gains a day earlier, expressing hope that their projected takeover of both chambers of Congress from January would result in greater military and financial assistance to Kyiv.In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF on Wednesday, Zelenskyy said Democrats had been vocal in their support for Ukraine, while also calling for closer ties between Washington and European countries.“I am also grateful to the Republicans, but the Democrats speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine and providing assistance to Ukraine,” he said.“They speak about renewing the connection between the United States and Europe… Therefore, there is hope that a balance of power will emerge and that we will receive more support,” Zelenskyy added.Trump has largely halted direct financial and military assistance to Ukraine, despite support for US aid among lawmakers from both parties.Zelenskyy said stronger American financial and military backing could also increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.“If Congress now speaks of strong financial support or military assistance, as Europe is doing and demonstrating today, then that will be something positive that will have an impact on Putin.” Democrats’ congressional gains could open path for Ukraine aid The Democrats’ victories in the midterm elections could give them greater influence over legislative priorities, including efforts to provide assistance to Ukraine, Reuters reported. The election results followed public anger over Trump’s policies, particularly the impact of the US-Iran war on the cost of living. Democrats secured at least 54 seats in the Senate against the Republicans’ 44, after winning contests in traditionally Republican states. They also gained at least 28 seats in the House of Representatives. With control of both chambers of Congress from January, Democrats will be able to determine which legislation comes up for a vote and when. New aid for Kyiv could secure the necessary two-thirds majority to overcome a veto by US President Donald Trump, according to Reuters. Democratic aides have identified assistance to Ukraine as a priority. The outcome sets the stage for a possible legislative deadlock in Washington over the next two years. It will also mark the first time Trump, who previously served as president from 2017 to 2021, faces a Congress in which Democrats control both chambers.
