Ghana-born MAGA blogger Samuel Sey who once said 'If you love America, you should support ICE' detained by ICE, faces deportation for visa overstay by four years; Wife sets up fundraiser
DHS said Samuel Sey does not have any pending immigration application and he will be deported for overstaying his visa by 4 years.

Samuel Sey, a Ghana-born conservative Christian blogger who has publicly defended US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown and mass deportation policies, has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is facing removal from the United States. The 39-year-old was detained at Columbus International Airport in Ohio on October 21 and is being held at Butler County Jail, according to reports. His detention has drawn attention because of his outspoken support for strict immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security told Religion News Service that Sey entered the United States legally in 2022 but overstayed his authorized period of admission by more than four years. The department also said he had no pending immigration applications and had accepted voluntary departure.“He will remain in ICE custody until removed from the United States,” a DHS spokesperson told Religion News Service.Sey’s supporters, however, have suggested that his detention could be linked to an administrative or paperwork issue. Conservative Christian commentators have rallied behind him, with some disputing the circumstances surrounding his arrest.A fundraising appeal set up for Sey’s family said his wife, Annie, was seeking his release on bail to resolve possible clerical issues concerning his immigration status. The couple has three children.

Sey’s support for Trump’s immigration crackdown

Sey has repeatedly defended stricter immigration enforcement and argued that deportations are compatible with Christian teachings.“Christian ethics do not denounce deportations. They demand it,” he wrote in an article last year, arguing that illegal immigration required a response under the law.He has also criticized people protesting against ICE operations. In January 2026, he wrote on X: “If you love America you should support ICE.”His detention has prompted a wave of reactions from conservative Christian commentators. Author Allie Beth Stuckey described the matter as a paperwork issue being worked through, while other supporters have appealed for prayers and financial assistance for his family.

What happens next?

DHS has said Sey will be deported and will remain in ICE custody until he is removed from the country. The department has not publicly specified whether he will be sent to Ghana or Canada. The case has attracted attention among conservative Christian circles because of Sey’s previous support for the administration’s immigration policies. While supporters have suggested an administrative error may be involved, DHS maintains that he overstayed his authorised admission and accepted voluntary departure.
