A five-year-old boy in Michigan has been recognised for his quick thinking after his grandmother collapsed during a medical emergency, prompting him to seek help while ensuring his three-year-old sister remained safe. The incident, reported by People and local news outlet WDIV-TV, took place in Cottrellville Township, where the young boy’s actions helped bring emergency assistance to his grandmother, Terri Ketelhut. The children were visiting their grandmother when she suddenly became unwell and fell to the floor. Hudson Tenn, who was five at the time, realised that she was not getting back up. With his younger sister, Harper, beside him, he tried to work out how to get help. Unable to find his grandmother’s car keys, Hudson decided to leave the house and look for someone who could assist. He took Harper with him and headed down a rural road, where the children were spotted by passing neighbours. A quick decision that made a difference Jason Markel and his son, Colton, were travelling along the road when they noticed the two young children. Hudson approached them to ask for help, while making sure Harper stayed safely on the grass beside the road. The pair stopped and brought the children into their truck before calling 911. Hudson then guided them back to the house, helping them locate his grandmother. When Markel reached the residence, he could see Ketelhut lying unconscious inside. However, barking dogs prevented him from immediately entering the property. Emergency responders and deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office arrived soon afterwards and began assisting the woman. According to local outlet WDIV-TV, one of the dogs was positioned near Ketelhut, complicating efforts to reach her. Deputies had to move the animal away before emergency medical personnel could provide treatment.Ketelhut was subsequently taken to hospital, where medical examinations determined that dehydration had caused her collapse. The episode came as a shock to the family, as she had not previously experienced a medical emergency of this kind. The timely intervention by the neighbours and emergency services ensured that she received the care she needed. Children recognised for their bravery Months after the incident, Hudson and Harper were honoured for their actions at a Cottrellville Township board meeting on October 14, 2026. Both children received Citizen Citation Awards in recognition of their role in getting help during the emergency.According to township officials, they are the youngest recipients of the award in St. Clair County’s history. Hudson was particularly praised for recognising that something was wrong, taking the initiative to find assistance and guiding the neighbours back to the house. His decision to keep his younger sister close and out of the roadway also demonstrated remarkable awareness for a child of his age.For the family, the recognition marked a moment of gratitude after an incident that could have ended very differently. Ketelhut expressed appreciation for the people who stopped to help and the deputies who responded to the emergency. What began as a frightening situation at home has since become a story of a young child responding with courage and determination. Hudson could not provide medical care himself, but he understood that his grandmother needed help and took the steps he could to get it.His actions, alongside Harper’s safety-conscious presence and the neighbours’ swift response, helped ensure that an adult medical emergency did not become an even greater tragedy.
