Many rise more than 70 metres into the sky, while together these forests store vast amounts of carbon, making them among the region’s most important natural climate reserves. The discovery, described in the peer-reviewed paper ‘Taiwan’s giant forests: distribution, tree height, aboveground carbon stock, and conservation’ published in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change, reveals that Taiwan’s mountains preserve one of the world’s last great strongholds of giant temperate forests. Scientists used airborne lasers to map Taiwan’s hidden giants Rather than relying solely on ground surveys, the research team employed airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, which uses laser pulses fired from aircraft to create highly detailed three-dimensional maps of forests. This allowed scientists to measure tree heights across rugged mountain terrain that is often inaccessible on foot.Researchers identified numerous stands of exceptionally tall trees, including forests containing individuals exceeding 70 metres in height. The survey revealed that Taiwan possesses one of the highest concentrations of giant trees in East Asia, many of which had never been comprehensively documented because of the island’s steep, remote landscape.The LiDAR data also enabled researchers to estimate forest structure and biomass with unprecedented precision, providing a much clearer picture of Taiwan’s remaining old-growth forests. As mentioned in ‘Taiwan’s giant forests: distribution, tree height, aboveground carbon stock, and conservation,’ these ancient ecosystems contain some of the highest aboveground carbon stocks recorded anywhere in East Asia. Their massive trunks, ancient trees, and thick forest canopy enable them to sequester large amounts of carbon, which could otherwise contribute to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.It was discovered that the forests with the tallest trees always contained the largest amount of carbon, thus emphasising the strong connection between forest maturity, diversity, and climate control. Protection of such ecosystems is therefore important not only for animals, but for tackling climate change around the world as well. Why Taiwan became a refuge for giant trees Taiwan’s geography has helped preserve these remarkable forests. The island’s rugged mountains rise to nearly 4,000 metres, creating a wide range of climates and making many forests difficult for large-scale logging or development to reach. High rainfall, frequent cloud cover and suitable temperatures have allowed several tree species to grow for centuries under favourable conditions.The authors of the Frontiers in Forests and Global Change study explain that these environmental conditions have enabled Taiwan to retain extensive old-growth forests despite centuries of human activity elsewhere across East Asia, where many comparable forests have been heavily logged or fragmented.Among the dominant giants are ancient conifers, including Taiwan cypress and Taiwan red cypress, alongside towering broadleaf species that together create exceptionally complex forest ecosystems. The discovery strengthens the case for protecting Taiwan’s last giant forests While many of the newly mapped forests lie inside protected areas, others remain vulnerable to natural disturbances and future environmental pressures.This group of scientists believes that correctly locating such colossal forests is crucial for future planning and conservation. It is possible to make conservation decisions after knowing locations of highest trees and carbon stock areas, to track changes in time and understand what consequences of climate change will have for those ancient systems.It is also evident from this work that remote sensing technologies become increasingly significant in contemporary conservation.
