Crimes Against Humanity: ‘Crimes against humanity’ complaints filed against Bangladesh ex-president

DHAKA: Days after Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned as Bangladesh’s president, complaints were filed against him with the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Sunday, seeking a probe into his role in “crimes against humanity” committed during the ‘2024 uprising’ against Sheikh Hasina government.The charges stem from the same events for which former PM Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia.Shahabuddin – a longtime ally of Hasina who was forced to flee Bangladesh due to the uprising – resigned on Friday, citing health complications.“The opposition, including National Citizen Party, has raised the allegations against Shahabuddin. They have every right to do so. But we have found nothing in those allegations that warrants our consideration,” home minister Salahuddin Ahmed said.

Law minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman, however, said Shahabuddin will be probed for corruption allegations.ICT chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said that his office had received two complaints – one from Bangladesh Azad Party and the other from Rastrosonglap Forum.“I have not yet gone through the complaints,” he said. “Shahabuddin, as the then president, had a role in the killings, torture, and other crimes committed against students and protesters,” Rastrosonglap Forum central member secretary Al Nur Mohammad Ayash alleged.
